Are you available during daytime hours and looking for a way to give back to your community? If you like to drive, become a volunteer driver and help seniors in your community remain independent. Seniors in neighborhoods throughout King County, who do not drive and are unable to take public transportation, turn to Senior Services to find rides to medical appointments, grocery stores, senior centers, hot lunch programs, and to run errands. Senior Services offers free programs to fill their transportation needs and volunteer drivers are urgently needed. Volunteer Transportation: Volunteers use their own vehicles to transport seniors from their homes to medical appointments. Volunteers choose when and where they wish to drive. Parents with children in school can choose to volunteer only during school hours. Also, parents who have children who are too young to be in school can bring them along. Senior Services reimburses for mileage and parking expenses and provides supplemental liability insurance. Senior Shuttles: Volunteers drive an agency van to pick up seniors at their homes and transport them to the local senior center, doctor’s office, grocery store, or to run other errands. Shuttles are available to seniors living in Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Des Moines, Normandy Park, Burien, and Highline. Volunteers choose the days and times they wish to drive and free training is provided. Both of these opportunities can fit into busy schedules. None of them require volunteers to lift or bear heavy weights. Volunteer drivers must be over 25 years old and hold a valid drivers license. To find out more about these flexible and highly rewarding volunteer opportunities, call Senior Services Transportation Program at 206-748-7588, 1-800-282-5815, or check the website. Senior Services is an independent non-profit organization serving King County Seniors since 1967. |
