Mister Rogers was one of the most comforting people on the planet when I was little. I remember settling down to watch him in the afternoon, looking in on him while he went through his transition from suit coat to sweater, shoes to sneakers. Every episode started with that same, calming routine. Now, with Mister Rogers on DVD, this experience can be passed on to another generation.
Adventures in Friendship has two episodes of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. In the first episode, Mister Rogers takes your child to visit a local restaurant, where he gives a tour of the restaurant experience, from cutlery to kitchen. He even points out the restrooms to reassure the little ones. Then, in the world of Make-Believe, Henrietta Pussycat and X the Owl work through some friendship issues to a satisfying conclusion.
The second episode takes Mister Rogers to a local music store, where he listens to a mandolin and chats about music. The world of Make-Believe in this episode teaches, very cleverly, how it is possible for people to be angry at each other without changing the fact that they still love one another. Mister Rogers was very good at teaching children about feelings, from how to identify difficult feelings, to constructive ways of expressing them.
A Day at the Circus also includes two episodes. The first episode features Mister Rogers visiting a circus, where he sees trapeze artists, acrobats, elephants, and more. The only possible downside to this episode is the presence of the clown, which may frighten some children. During the visit to the land of Make-Believe, Chuckles the Clown brings smiles to Lady Aberlin's friends, helping them feel better about themselves through laughter.
The second episode focuses on music, with Mister Rogers visiting a friend with an impressive collection of musical instruments. Music runs through the entire episode, with the land of Make-Believe enjoying a bass violin festival.
Bonus features on both DVDs include a fascinating tour of a teddy bear factory on Adventures in Friendship, and tour of a pretzel factory on A Day at the Circus. Other features include a recipe, sing-along, read-along, games, activities, and a neighborhood gallery. The DVDs are available for $17.98 each. -©2005 Jessica Lane |
