Meet our advertisers: Pheasant Fields Farm

Nikki Johanson has some simple advice for improving the health of our families and our environment: “Eat local.”

At Pheasant Fields Farm, Nikki is committed to producing “fresh produce without the use of pesticides or herbicides.”

“The bottom line is, it is healthier,” Nikki says. “Nutritionists tell us that we should be eating food grown in our own environment.”

Pheasant Fields has been a part of Silverdale’s history for over a hundred years. It was originally homesteaded in 1885 and in the early 1900s was expanded to fifteen buildings mainly dedicated to chickens. Nikki says this helped make Silverdale the “Egg capital of the world.”

Her parents purchased the land in 1949 and Nikki inherited it in 1987. In 1999 she and her husband Allen were enjoying semi-retirement on the farm when they were approached by a friend interested in offering farm tours to local schools. Nikki’s eyes were opened to the potential of Pheasant Fields to make a difference in the community. “I realized our farm could be a valuable educational resource for others,” she says. From there Nikki became a founding member of the Poulsbo Farmers Market, which furthers her mission to make fresh local food available to the community.

Today, Pheasant Fields Farm sells produce, locally raised eggs, chicken, and beef at their farm stand and the Poulsbo Farmers Market. Seasonal activities include Farm Camp, and a summertime day program for children ages six through 11. In the fall, there is a u-pick pumpkin patch, a corn maze, and evening family entertainment.

At the heart of the farm is the farm share or CSA program. Subscribers receive produce weekly from May through October in return for a fee paid up front to provide seed money for the farm for next year’s crops. For the 2006 season, Pheasant Fields Farm will provide 26 weeks of the freshest natural produce around from fresh spring greens to golden ears of corn. Subscribers are encouraged to volunteer on the farm to enrich their understanding of the process of sustainable farming. Nikki also provides helpful information and recipes to ensure the food is as delicious as it is healthy.

Fresh, local produce, meat, and eggs from Pheasant Fields Farm are available from the farm stand or at the Poulsbo Farmers Market. Subscriptions to the CSA program are taken in advance. Pheasant Fields Farm is open daily, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and is located at 13274 Clear Creek Rd, NW Silverdale. For more information, call 360-697-6224. Learn more online.
