Labyrinths have existed for years, and while most of us know them as the balancing board toy that mobilizes a ball by knobs on two sides of the box, there are many others from which to choose. Doodling can even be considered a labyrinth! Maze play can be meditative, and encourage the artistic side of your brain. Your children may or may not be "doodlers," but they'll enjoy these labyrinths regardless. Here are some great labyrinths to try with your children. The Grand Prix, by Erzi, is great fun for the three-year-old group. It's held like a steering wheel and as the child moves two metal balls through the maze, he might feel like he is driving. The maze is long, with two balls that can be guided together or separately. One excellent feature is that the balls can't fall out! The Color Line, by Erzi, is a hand held labyrinth that comes in a variety of colors and is relatively inexpensive. Each board comes with several wooden balls and one metal ball. Your five-year-old will enjoy racing the balls around the maze, but take care with the small balls that can escape. Lastly, for children ages five and older, try the Labyrinth Balance Board, by Challenge and Fun. Your child will enjoy moving the balls through the maze, and balance boards similar to this have been shown to improve neurological development in children. They have also been used in programs that treat ADD in children. This particular board was also recently awarded the 2004-2005 Informal Educational Products Award. It can hold up to 275lbs, so fear not mom and dad! Click here to view labyrinths. |
